What is the EUDR and Why Does it Matter for Your Business?
The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) ensures commodities entering or exiting the EU market are deforestation-free and legally produced. The regulation aims to:
- Prevent the sale or export of products linked to deforestation and forest degradation within the EU
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss associated with deforestation.
- Ensure EU consumption does not drive global forest loss.
Non-compliance means risking exclusion from the EU market.
Who is Affected & When?
- Operators: Entities placing relevant commodities or products on the EU market for the first time, or exporting them from the EU.
- Traders: Entities making these products available on the EU market in the course of a commercial activity, but not the first to do so.
Both EU and non-EU companies are subject to the EUDR if their products enter or leave the EU market. National authorities will conduct checks, and non-compliant products may be banned from the market. NGOs and individuals can also raise concerns, prompting investigations.
Enforcement Timeline
- 30 December 2025: Enforcement begins for most companies.
- 30 June 2026: Enforcement begins for micro and small enterprises.

The EUDR covers key commodities and their derived products:

- Derived products are items like: leather, chocolate, palm oil, paper, furniture, printed books.
